Background of the study
Digital communication on Twitter has fundamentally altered the way syntax is employed in online discourse. Twitter threads—series of connected tweets—provide an evolving canvas where Nigerian users experiment with sentence structures, punctuation, and word order. In these threads, linguistic creativity manifests in the form of abbreviated sentences, nonstandard punctuation, and even deliberate syntactic fragmentation that convey tone and urgency. Nigerian users leverage the limitations imposed by character counts to innovate, resulting in hybrid structures that merge informal conversational patterns with elements of formal grammar (Okeke, 2023). These innovations are not only reflective of a broader digital culture but also signify a shift in how language adapts to new media environments. The study examines how Twitter thread structures facilitate syntactic experimentation by providing a continuous narrative space, thereby allowing users to build complex ideas through segmented yet interconnected tweets. It also explores how these structures reflect cultural identities, regional influences, and the interplay between indigenous and global linguistic trends. By documenting these syntactic modifications, the research aims to contribute to our understanding of digital language evolution and the reconfiguration of traditional syntax in the era of social media (Ibrahim, 2024). The investigation situates Twitter threads as both a product and driver of linguistic innovation, highlighting their role in shaping modern communication practices.
Statement of the problem
Although Twitter threads are widely used in Nigerian digital communication, there is limited systematic research on the syntactic transformations they inspire. Existing studies tend to focus on lexical innovations rather than the structural alterations in sentence construction that occur within threads. This lack of comprehensive analysis hinders our understanding of how digital constraints and creative practices interact to reshape syntax. Consequently, there is a need to explore how Twitter thread structures influence syntactic patterns, potentially challenging conventional grammatical rules. This study aims to address this gap by examining the morphological and syntactic innovations emerging from Twitter threads, thereby clarifying the broader implications for digital language practices in Nigeria (Chukwu, 2024).
